About
Ethical, innovative, values-driven storytelling.
Listen to me discuss my philisophy as a theatre artist on The Ghost Lights Podcast with Sam Gilstrap.
A note on my goals and values:
I believe that every detail we put on stage matters. As an artist, my intentions and impact should be as aligned as possible through inclusive, committed, and grounded collaboration. I believe harmful choices should be actively avoided, and when harm is caused, every attempt at accountability and repair should be made.
As storytellers, we have a responsibility to our audiences, our collaborators, and ourselves: To make ethical and innovative storytelling synonymous, to be representative of our communities in the stories they engage with, and to create a safe and sacred space in which to explore. Our choices make an impact. It is my duty as a creator and collaborator to make sure my impact is one that makes everyone feel authentically seen and heard.
A note on my vision and aesthetic:
I create art that is raw, grounded, and innovative. I enjoy equalizing the importance of all theatrical elements, and reflecting this in my process. The actors and the text are equally as important as the lighting, sound, costumes, environment, and audience. I enjoy breaking down the normal hierarchies usually associated with the creative process and hearing everyone’s collaborative input early on.
I create theatre that is challenging and justice-oriented. I believe in naming and confronting the oppressive systems at play and opening the conversation about our relationships with these systems. I believe in mutual care and interdependency as an artist, and that nothing is more important than the wellbeing of every artist and audience member in the room. I enjoy queering familiar narratives, and creating new ones that demand space for historically underrepresented voices.
